New 4th Edition!

As a nurse, you are already a manager. You must manage patient caseloads and care plans as well as supervise aides, technicians, and other care providers. But moving from this type of management to a defined nurse manager or supervisory role is not a natural progression. Nurse managers must command a vast, diverse, and robust skill set, and those skills must first be defined, explained, and operationalized for success. In an environment that offers new managers little support, or when you transition to a new organization or role–where do you turn?

The Nurse Manager’s Survival Guide (4th Ed.) provides an overview of a nurse manager’s major roles and responsibilities-all the fundamentals needed for success in one easy-to-use, consolidated, practical reference. Practical answers to everyday challenges are discussed and presented in a conversational manner. From tips on building the right team to budgeting basics, time-management tools, and advice on taking care of yourself (and your team), best-selling author Tina Marrelli supplies the resources new and experienced nurse managers need to excel in day-to-day operations.

The Nurse Manager’s Survival Guide by Tina Marrelli is a great text for any nurse manager, either beginning of well into their career. The book offers valuable information on the core concepts or leadership, resource management, quality and budgeting. There are also tips on taking care of yourself and a section for when things go wrong. The unique elements of the book are the scenarios, managerial tips, thoughts for consideration and notes. I greatly enjoyed this book, the topics are discussed in a clear and concise manner and the information is very pertinent and timely. I loved the section on “when bad things happen to good manager.” This is so important and hardly ever discussed. In all, I feel that this is a great text for any manager and one they will find certainly worthwhile.
